Megasquirting my 604

I have a 1976 Peugeot 604SL automatic. I think it is the oldest one in the UK. These cars are now extremely rare in the UK (bit still worthless) and so there is not really a community like this to discuss things.

So I thought I would post in here and see what info I can steal from you guys :D

One problem with the SL is that it has the wierd small/big Solex carb setup, and that these never worked well even from new. I have original road test reports from 76 which state that the engine idled cold at 2000rpm. Not too useful on an automatic. I'm also getting only 13mpg.

I already have my megasquit kit which I am figuring out how to build, and I have a Ford Falcon throttle body on its way from Australia.

The idea is to mount the throttle body under the existing pancake filter so that it can't really be seen under there. The megasquirt will be hidden behind the glovebox.

Has anyone here put megasquirt on a PRV?

Do Alpines have a toothed timing wheel for a crank sensor?

The easiest way to fit a timing wheel appears to be to fix it to the crank pulley on the front of the engine but it's not too stealth. As the engine has to come out anyway for other reasons I would be interested in putting one in the bell housing if I could.

Easy enough to just plonk the GTA turbo inlet manifold on with a turbo flywheel and there ya go ..ish :lol:
Modify the std Renix tooth pattern though as it's a tad confusing for other systems .It has a big tooth gap pattern that messes up non OE ecu but easliy sorted by machining the big tooth into two .
All doable and I have the bits in the shed :wink:
Alternatively I also have a crank pulley trigger system ready to go

There is a Renault 25 turbo for sale on ebay, take the engine out of that and drop in!!! Bingo one rapid 604, I used to love these cars a specialist in Tewkesbury has two a gold one and a black one.

which is why it will be staying as standard as possible

Mine still has steel wheels with chrome hub caps

however I do want to actually drive the car, and it is undriveable in it's current form. This is the second one I have owned, and the previous one was just as bad, but as that was a manual I could get round it by keeping the revs up until it was warm. This just doesn't work with an auto.

I have spoken to people who owned these from new and they have all told me that they are nearly impossible to get them to run right.

The aim of the Falcon throttle body/megasquirt is not to make lots of power. I just want a car that can be driven easily and comfortably and that doesn't burn petrol for no good reason.

Yes Eddie Wynne (E M Wynne) on here has, and the necessary practical experience to get you up and running with it, currently fitted to his daily driver 24V, but will work equally well with your setup. As Lee has suggested you can modify a GTA turbo flywheel, and with the appropriate bell housing you can fit the OE tdc sensor. Hook this up to MS, and you are away... I expect if you talk nicely enough to Eddie he'll send you a good base map and general settings to get you up and running too.

Good luck with that, and sounds a nice interesting project, so please keep us updated, any questions just ask, and suggest you stick up a thread in the projects section.

Sorry, missed that, then you need the flywheel off the Espace 3ltr n/a even-fire auto, rest as before. This has an outer ring with drillings than a tooth pattern for the TDC pickup. You can modify this as well, but I thought the later MS firmware accepted the Renix pattern now? I did have a few of those flywheels, and CLee may still have one as I took all my 3ltr auto motors up to him, so possibly one is still kicking about. If not have a search, but I'm sure you'll get one easily enough.

Am I right in thinking that Espaces can have 12V or 24V 3.0 engines?
Is it only a 12V that is useful to me?
what about Peugeot 605/Citroen XM?

Sounds like the A310 Alpine set up.
And it'll have the 'Odd Fire' 2664 engine.

except that it only makes 130bhp
When I looked at an Alpine at Vie en Blu the only difference that I could see was that the Alpine seems to have a much nicer exhaust manifold than the 604

Odd fire and EFI, doesn't that mean the ecu will just do the fuelling and the ignition will stay conventional (as EFI set ups dont like odd fire?) if so and it's throttle body injection a crude speed signal is all you need.....like the ignition?
