Challenge in draining transaxle oil

Postby Buzzer » Sun Mar 06, 2022 10:05 pm

I am trying to service my gta gearbox and change the transaxle oil. The only challenge Is some previous individual has araldited the drain plug in. Aghhhh. Effort and even oxy acetylene heat on the plug can’t shift it. Guess it was previously stripped thread. I will at some point take out the box and sort it. But at the moment any thoughts on how I can change the oil. I have vacuum pump I can use in the filler but that won’t be able to drain too much I think. Any ideas welcome.

Hi Buzzer, Aside of tipping the car so the pump can get as much as possible, I think you are already there with the best idea.

All you can do is drill it out and retap and then flush and put a magnetic plug in. :yawn

Yes was thinking about that too. I’ll try and remove it sucking it out through the filler first and see how far I can go. If I can get 75% of the oil out and the oil looks ok. That will do for the moment. I even thought of drilling and tapping a smaller hole so I am drilling ally not steel. See how I get on.

You should be able to suck most of it out OK.

If the filler is destroyed you can fill via the speedo sender hole but if the drain is wrecked not much you can do except drill and tap. You could try welding a nut on.

I did manage to get 2.5 ltr of oil out at least and it took a good 2.5ltrs to top up, so that will do at the moment. So a result really.
