Wet footwell

Postby Peter Doyle » Sun Jun 05, 2005 1:11 pm

:( I have discovered the rear footwell (offside) on my GTA Turbo D501 - 1989 2.5 is soaking wet... The top of the carpet is dry so seems its coming from below or tracking in somewhere.... need to have the seats and carpet all out to investiagate properly! Anyone else had this problem?

Thanks

If somebody's had the front seats out in the past, they bolts are normally rusted and can shear off, so there maybe an open seat mount where water can get it quite easily..

Seen another car with just a simple crack in the rear footwell as the plastic is quite thin, so that can be another cause..

I traced the leak on mine to underneath the back seat. The mounting for the fuel pump (under the drivers side wheel arch, under a plastic cover) had been ripped off at some point and bodged back on using self tappers. The original mounting holes were left open and spray off the rear tyres had been slowly leaking in. The corner of both rear floorpans can often get damaged as they are close to the jacking points and jacks or wooden blocks can catch them if you are not careful.

Hi to everyone here - 1st post (just found this forum) but a long standing GTA owner (12+ years)

My GTA had the same problem (offside rear) - went into Renault Manchester for an extensive (and expensive) water test. The reckoned it was the door seals on the front door - a few hundred quid lighter to my disgust, the problem was still occuring. Why they thought it was the front seals was beyond me - but hey, you go with what the "experts" say.

Anyway, I decided I would dedicate a weekend to looking at the problem myself. After a few hours pulling apart the rear seat area, I actually found the source - it was the rear seatbelt fixiing on the main body. From memory I had to remove the rear seat but after that, access to the bolt fixing was straightforward. I actually saw water coming into the car via the fixing during a test - I reomoved the bolt and the fixing and then used some PTFE and some rubber sealent. 8+ years on not a drop has got into the car's rear footwell/seat area! Problem solved!! :D
