For those that don't 'get it', the point of the holes isn't to fudge anything but to ensure that there's a bit of flow at 88o when it should open (assuming it will fully open before say 92o) and to get the water/heat fully around the 'stat' but not remove the warm up either (just slow it slightly). If there is an underlying problem then of course that needs to be sorted but it doesn't appear that there is definitely a problem at the moment, and it won't be known for certain until the stat housing is leak free.

Happy to report that the whole cooling system is now working very well. Temperature rises to 90 within a few miles of driving, and pretty much stays put no matter what the conditions. The level in the header tank (which is now correct) is being maintained exactly so there's no leaks or seeps anywhere. The thermostat housing is now bone dry since the thermostat has gone back in. Perseverance is paying off. Alp has been my daily driver for the last week or two and just appears to get better with use.

Funny you should mention that... now it's all running so well there has been a slight change in plans for this car... beginning to think it's too nice to hoon around a track and don't fancy re-inventing the whole suspension just to get a bit of positive camber!
