What is this seal?

Not sure my sump has ever been dropped but I have a couple of bolts that are rounded - fortunately they are on the open side with relatively easy access - what have you found best to remove them? I don't have a bolt remover socket small enough (think I need 6mm) but do have drills and screw pullers etc.

Also where to find replacements (there are a couple of used full sets on eBay but I only need 2!).

If you have room ....... try a long nose mole wrench to grip the rounded bolt head. Stanley ones have very sharp teeth and will grip the softer bolt head.

It really hurt me this morning when I paid £15 for the full set

Still got to get 2 of the little buggers out - my long nose grips were no good so have ordered the ones above plus a smaller set of bolt extractors. Just have to wait for them to be delivered.

Will try and replace the starter motor instead so at least I have done 1 job!

Ok sump removed.

There is some kind of seal on the gear box side - circled in yellow - could this be the cause of a leak?.

What is it called and how can you replace it (part name/number).

My car had a minor leak from this area and I don't just want to replace the sump seal if that will not fix it?

Those are just the tails of the horshoe shaped seal for the flywheel end bearing.

Apply a little sealant there when you refit the sump gasket if you are worried.

It is hard to tell in the photo, but it looks like oil is on the inside face of the flywheel, pointing to the rear main seal on the crank leaking. You will find out soon enough. As mentioned, a couple of dobs of silicone where the two rubbers are slid into the rear bearing cap is all you need to seal that area.
