Silver Turbo to sell or not to sell?

Hi Guys,

I'm slowly taking stock of my car situation and think I might have crossed the line between a manageable hobby and a possessive car collection which I feel, especially with a young family, fierce work commitments and also having inherited my late uncles 1974 Lotus Elite 502 (a car I grew up with) that something now has to give or go.

Pretty much every car in the house hold has some form of sentimental value, apart from the GTA - only because the situation to build one has not yet been realised, and due to the above it maybe sometime before this happens.

So it's with a heavy heart I'm thinking of selling the GTA so this could be appreciated, used in full and let someone else have the enjoyment of a great car.

If anyone has the need for another or knows that someone who does, then please let me know. I'm not even sure on the market value c£6.5K - 7K??

I can afford to keep the car and ultimately I'm secretly hoping someone will talk me into this, but I do have an urge to reduce the amount of 'stuff' that we own, a sort of less is more approach?

I think values will rise sharply this year so bare that in mind. Value wise they are all over the place at the moment, without knowing the condition of yours it's hard to say. Whether it needs paint or not is a big consideration. A non-runner needing paint £1500-2000, A useable running car needing a repaint £3500-4000, a decent car needing no real expenditure £7000-9000, A really nice example £10000-12000 and an absolute minter £13000-15000 seems about right to me :0)

I'd forget paint and look underneath every time.
I've got 3 in for sale atm and they all need paint but they need little in the way of rot repair and yes values are on the up .I'd raise that bottom line figure to 2k for a scrapper tbh as spares are fast running dry .....I can't get hold of much GTA/610 specific stuff these days. .

Hi guys, thanks for the replies and interesting feedback re values. So few cars come up for sale and when they do are hanging around for some time (red one in Ireland for c£14k springs to mind).

Growing up in the 80's with parents that owned 5GT's and Gordinis the GTA/Alpine was a school boys dream. My first car after passing my driving test at 17 was an R5 Gordini, then came the Gordini Turbos etc.

What amazes me is the value these humble (but so likeable) 5's have risen to in comparison with the rear engined, hand build exotica of the GTA....not sure why though?

The equivalent 911SC and 944 Turbo have gone stella and ultimately the sporting heritage/brand of Porsche will carry this. But for the sales of GTA's lost back in the 80's to the 911/944's I wonder how many of those Porsche owners came so close to buying one (spin of the coin decision) and would then find themselves looking again at the GTA market today?

It's your call if you want to sell or not. The prices must go up it's as simple as that.

More on the market will generate more interest and get values up. That's what I'm trying to do currently. I have two GTA's now in at RATS needing re-commissioning and then will be for sale.

As for values I think £15k is bob on for mint GTA. 10-15 for a nice one. 6 - 10 for a decent car needing paint.

Lee I think paint is the biggest consideration now, I know the rot repairs can be extensive but it's hard to get a painter willing to even take on a GTA due to the complexity of painting the composite, have seen a good few cars painted for several thousand pounds and within a year they look terrible, bubbling, cracking etc. So when you factor in a repaint it's not just the money its the potential aggravation that goes with it. Hence I'm going to try a wrap on my latest project. Come back Andy :0).

We'll have to agree to disagree.You can drive a car with bad paint and you can drive a car that's rotten ...which would you chose then?

My paint guys charge around £4k for a glass out,colour change respray and they will warranty it but wrap is a good option.
Id be interested to see how the rear spoiler turns out as that'll be the hardest area I reckon.

Pair of these sorts any paint issues.............work on ugly wimmen aswell.

Met some guys at a show in pool last month who specialised in rapping Car's the choice now available is amazing plus the self healing of the rap it is the way to go, when you are bored with the colour or do some damage fix and re rap.
The amount of body work a epoxying that the rear of my car will have had done to it for the kit it is bound to settle and need reworking in a years time plus I use the car a lot, and l hate driving a car worrying about getting stone chips. £1000 to 1500 for average car

Lee I'd agree I'd much rather drive a solid car than a rusty one but generally it's cheaper to fix the rot than to repaint in most cases, and once it's fixed it's fixed. Whereas cosmetics will always be consideration as most people spending decent money on any car do not want it to look a mess. And even if the paint is warrantied it's still aggravation getting it sorted.
