Fantastic, what a bi*ch to remove!

Just need to top her back up with fluid and tighten that swine of a bolt up at the back of the thermo housing. :shock:

Put the thermostat in boiling water and it has opened right up, does this mean i can now eliminate the over heating problem as a result of a faulty thermostat?

Check it thoroughly so it isnt intermittanly sticking....

If it isnt the thermostat, then you may have an air leak somewhere that is drawing in air and causing an air lock. If you drive the car and find it overheating, best to pull over and bleed that front screw until hot water comes out, if its cool first then you know its an air lock - then you have to find the cause.

Does it overheat everytime you drive or intermittantly?

Could be knackered water pump, or small headgasket blow putting combustion gasses into the coolant system..

Yes, if it's opening it's working .Process of elimination would suggest blockage .Are you still getting an intermittent cold/hot on the cabin control :?:

Still getting cool air coming through the heater.

On my drive today (with the fan running constantly) it didn't go past 90 degrees and that was with varied driving, A roads and then in traffic.

I then got the revs up, this is when it started to heat up again near to the red on the temperature guage.

I hope it isn't the start of the head gasket£££

Have you tried the test I mentioned for pressure in the water system? The Omega only used a minute amount of water to start with and the thing about mayonnaise in the oil filler cap is virtually a myth......you only reach that stage when its well and truly f!*ked.

Bring it to the ACE on Monday and let David plug in his tester to see if the car is actually hot. If it's anything like his car or mine the guage could be screwed. I think Davids needle moves when you rev the car.

David,
I've got similar problems with mine but exactly what van your tester diagnose? (It's a long drive with the heater on just to be told my engine is genuinely overheating) :roll:

Is it the guage?
someone, cant remember who but they even posted a picture, robbed the kitchen meat thermometer and crafted it into a screw in sensor. This enabled him to get a good digital read out of water temp. "site search" is not helping me much, and the craftsman/inventor did offer it out for loan I think. This could save you the long trip, but what use is an over heating car, so get it sorted.

I know it's already been mentioned, but are you absolutely certain no hoses are leaking? When I was having overheating problems with mine, I replaced the rad, thermostat, expansion bottle, all the fans were working and I replaced all the hoses - or so I thought! It turned out the short fat one that comes off the back off the water pump was leaking. It's very difficult to check, as it's buried in the 'v' of the engine under the inlet manifold. I didn't spot it because any water it was leaking into the 'v' that would be an indication of a leak (which is what it was doing) was quickly evaporating due to the heat of the engine. It wasn't until I actually took the inlet manifold off and examined it visually that I noticed how badly worn it was. Too late, as I'd already blown the head gaskets by then!

'Craftsman/inventor' ....... well I'm flattered. I'm more tempted to subscribe to Rupert's theory that it was the funniest thing he'd ever seen on this site though!

Stuart D has asked to borrow it so I plan to post it to him on Saturday but for the first time ever I might actually be able to make it to the Ace on Monday (work permitting as usual)

I actually borrowed David G's unit first and that didn't detect any problems. However I wanted to be doubly sure as even then you are still reliant on the oddities of the GTA loom and it's connection to the ECU.

The good thing about my gauge is that it's entirely independent of any GTA electrics or gauges.

My diagnostic tester tells you the engine temp through the ecu sensor, so therfore the true reading (as long as your ecu coolant sensor isnt up the spout too!) I do rent the unit out on my site though, and its good for checking all the other sensors are functional too..

On mine and Steves car, the dash coolant gauge goes up with the oil pressure gauge, so when i'm on load it can look like the temp is 120, when I let of the throttle and idle it then sits at 90.

Jon, I'm willing to bet that the heater matrix is busted and the thing has been bypassed so there is no heater...
Apart from the gauge are thare actually any other signs of overheating?
When it is overheating, try bleeding the radiator to check the water in the rad is boiling hot..(mind you don't scald yourself tho!)
I cant see that it is the water pump, if it was, the engine would have died ageas ago.

On other motors - temp gauge rising and falling with engine revs would be an idicator of the instrument panel voltage regulator being shot. But god knows if these cars have one or where you'd find it - probably an integral part of the dash.

..Its more likely that the badge on the nosecone is the cause.. :lol:
