Has any one got any experience or feedback on these "earth magnet" oil filter magnets.
My Renault supplier oil filter is about 8cm in diameter,

ss300 is £29.47 by the time VAT and P&P is added.
also see these internal pictures and other info from manufacturer.

or how about these, with a cable tie for added security?

Im a little dubious. If the particles are small enough to pass through the filter, then the filter manufacture must deem their size small enough not to cause a problem..?

And if they do pass through, would you want them all collecting in one area, especially your filter. They were saying just after a few minutes there was quite a collection..

I think this is more relevent for yank motors with alot of them being cast iron bottom ends (and heads too..) Obviously lots more ferrous material, than out aluminium counterparts..

David, I think the filter is designed to let the smallest particules through, else it would get clogged up real quick and then pressure problems are likely to follow. Low pressure on the engine side and high on 1 side of the filter, both not being good. So it just lets the little stuff through. Like 95% of engine design concepts, it seems to be another one of those "reasonable-fit" compromises.

I take your point about it collecting all the debris in the filter. Not the best place and could instigate a much bigger problem, especially if the magnet fell off and all the debris was released at once.

I also take your point about them big ferrus yank motors, but surely we have ferrus cranks/cams/gears and chains etc in steel bearing shells so there is probably some stuff to catch too.

There is an "oil pan" flat magnet option available, but I guess you would need to remove the pan to get the debris out, unless magnet removal and an oil drain is enough to flush it out. Plus, we have an alloy pan which a magnet will not stick to and it has no flat face, just cooling fins.

Dip stick or Drain plug magnet seems a good idea then???

Yes, magnetise your dipstick for a day on a strong magnet, then run the car around for a bit and see if anything collects on it.. :D

I seen these filter magnets before but was not convinced enough to fork out the money, so I just got my self a Renault 14 sump plug with a magnet already attached for a fraction of the price :D

Looks good, sounds good, but no price, so proably prohibitouvly expensive and meant for jet engines..

I'm going to try this:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/20-NEODYMIUM-NdFeB-RARE-EARTH-MAGNETS-50X10X1-5mm_W0QQitemZ7577601983QQcategoryZ1267QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem on my LS400, Alooy engine too and it does plenty of miles. I have already examined the internals of a used oil filter so I'll let you know the out come in a couple of months time.
