Air intake

Postby peterg » Thu Mar 02, 2006 4:47 pm

Slightly confused myself today (not difficult before anyone else says it!).....with the air intake system removed and the engine running I can put my hand completely over the turbo intake and the engine doesnt miss a beat. Cant think there are any leaks.....where is the engine getting its air from?? I suspect the answer is obvious and I am embarassed already for not thinking of it  !!!!

Can't think how else it gets in there :? You mustn't be blocking the pipe completely else it would be sucking your hand in

P.S
Have you got that CC working yet :?:

The turbo wasnt spinning....its hard to hold on to the car and cover the turbo while the car is going up the road above 3000rpm!! I assume that even at idle the engine gets its air through the turbo housing???
CC is ready to roll......its all fully plumbed in, I just need to rig up the dashboard switch.....will do it when I get back from Vegas in 10 days.

All the air enters the turbo so that's just weird. Are you covering it completely??

Vegas - woo hoo! Where are you staying?

Check out the fountain at the Belagio and also marvel at the fact that they built the canals of Venice on the first floor of the Venetian. Tonnes of water suspended one storey up........ well it wouldn't do to have the gambling on the first floor and trying to get tonnes of Americans up the stairs would it?

staying at The Luxor for that extra tacky but luxurious touch! I have never wanted to go, but a friend of Trudy's has decided to get married there. I am going with an open mind and leaving most of my credit cards at home...that way I wont have to sell the Alpine to pay my gambling debts!

I thought the same about the turbo, but I covered it as fully as I could and it didnt even hesitate. Ive owned a few cars in my time and normally this would cause a stall or at least the engine to hesitate!

Could it be drawing air through the dump valve?

I'm on the same track as mitchella, cos while mine was dismantled, I put my hand over the input pipe to the intercooler, while the turbo plenum was off, and it was about to stall. So the dump valve sounds like it, however I dont think it is designed to maximise air flow in that direction.

Now what is it about engines that we like to put our hands in places and see what happens??? My Dad did something similair on an air re-circulation heat exchanger unit...... and lost the end of his finger in a fan. Pretty stupid really...... yeh "like farther like son" before some one else mentions it!

It's a primal thing. If we see a hole we have to see what can go in it
