GTA Rear seatbelts

Hi Guys

Decided to put this here rather than in projects to get maximum exposure

Has anyone fitted inertia reel seatbelts in the rear of a GTA? If so what dod you do for the upper mounting point?

I guess the lower mounts just used the existing points.

Also, how did you find space for the reel?

I take it you have little uns and your worried about transporting them in the back?

I did read in an old Le Journal (you all laugh but trust me CAR does have lot's of Alpine GOLD when it comes to very useful info ) about a 70 mph crash in a GTA when their 5 year old boy had internal injuries due to the lap belts.

Cut a long story short the car was written off and I think after a while in hospital (3 weeks) the lad recovered. Sobering stuff and enough for me to never transport my kids in the back of my GTA/A610 on any long/higher speed journeys.

Anyway back to the original post, it has been done by Paul Sage I think so might be worth getting in touch. Believe it or not the guy who had it done was the person who had the crash with his lad that I mentioned above, he bought another GTA some years later and had this rear seat belt conversion done.

They are not so little, 17 years old and 12 years old, but yes that's my concern along with sever whiplash etc.

I will speak with Paul Sage - how do i get hold of him?

It just needs a chasis strong point for the upper mounts.

Looking at the chassis diagram, the only point thats high enough is the rear turrets but I can't picture how these can be accessed from inside the car.

There is a roll bar that runs above the glass partition so perhaps that can be tied into .My cage picks up on it .

Behind the head lining?

I I wonder if I could use a harness fitting kit of the various types available?

Does the rear glass bond to the roll bar?

The roll bar ties into the wheel arch pockets and runs over the glass ,not bonded to it ,,the rear screen hinges bolt to it .You can see where the diagonal on the cage goes through to meet it just above the arch pocket mount .

If you can tie it into the roll bar maybe using the inertia belt from a picasso centre seat would be easier? would add a photo to help explain but it wont play

According to the parts book the 610 could have full rear belts fitted but I have only seen one (and then only in pictures, a blue car sold by David Gentlemen some while back). I had a search around mine but couldn't find any preinsalled mounts so I guess they must need to be drilled into the structure Lee describes.

Not enertia Reels but my 1988 LHD turbo has lap diagonals fitted in the rear
The top mount was there on the roll bar a hole was drilled from the inside opposite the rear seat fold down latchs by seat belt specialists to gain access the mounts may be seen with the side vents removed

There is a ' bracket' on the roll bar in just the right place it seems .It faces inwards up against the fibreglass so I can't tell if it has a tapped hole ,may just be a brace .I could chop through on my car and see .
If not I'm sure we could make it so .Do you want me to investigate Nick ?Might throw collection date back a bit though .Need to check what is possible and source an appropriate belt system .
My kitcar mate will most likely have a solution

I think we leave it for now, unless you think it would be a real PITA to do it at a later stage? It can't be that hard to get the seats out and have a look (famous last words)

I'd be interested in this too..for the nippers...as at the moment my gta gets too little use as i rarely drive unaccompanied.

In the car adverts section there was/is (?) a car listed (red turbo ?) with rear 3 point seat belts (fitted by paul sage)...could ask the old owner from the ad as i assume the car sold.I did ask paul some time back..think he mentioned attaching mounts/plates to the roll bar..think it involved some welding (not 100% sure)...sounded like quite a bit of work but certainly it has been done.

(just checked ...86 turbo in the adverts mentioned..full rear seatbelts after tricky conversion by paul)

An integrated reel into the seat backs would be a neat solution but difficult to make it safe i'd guess...so i suppose attaching to the roll bars the easiest option...but can't quite picture where the reels would go.

Any one out there interested in a fitting service (Lee ? or Paul) would surely have a queue of customers. ??

3 point should be easily doable ,inertia might take a bit more head scratching and must be 100% .Looking at the std kc bits they range from 50 to 100 quid a pair .Mods to trim and fixings to rollbar need to be looked at but very doable .
I have JIL buck naked and lots of spare trim so will have a proto session when things get slack .Hopefully that will be a long way off

Its worth looking at inertia reels that can be mounted at varying angles. Most of the kit car type parts will do this

A number of years ago, I bought some static 3-point belts to go into the back of my GTA, and I'd started exploring it with Paul.

In the end, we didn't go ahead as he reckoned that he'd have to drill through the bulkhead - probably necessitating engine-out - to make the fastening points for the upper mountings.

Still got the static 3-point belts in the garage - if there's an easy way, it would be great to know.

In fact, I did this very conversion on my old Fuego back in about 1993. It had the upper mounting points there but filled with a blanking grommet. Drilled those out (some wouldn't un-screw) and put the 3-pointer static belts in there. Worked a treat - and I was surprised that the older Fuego had the pre-installed mountings and my GTA didn't.
