PRV V6 24v

Postby Ady » Wed Jun 22, 2005 6:12 am

Hi everyone,

I regret that I don't own or intend to own a GTA, though I apppreciate they are very nice supercars.

I do however plan on getting a PRV V6 engine and was wondering if I could get any help?

My 1st question; is the 24v version of the wet-liner type?

Thank you,

Ady

Yep, being PRV, all the bottom ends are basically the same, removable wet liners. 24v has good designed heads, hydraulic or mechanical lifters depending on year. Downside is still single cam with dual rockers.

Cheers muchly David! :D

I thought that the 24v photos on this site were mislabled, being SOHC 'an all!

Am I right in thinking though that they are 60 degrees and not 90?

Ahh, depends which 24v you are thinking of. PRV 24v up to 1995 is 90 degrees, SOHC, 1996 onwards L7X version is 24v 60 deg V ,quad cam on belts, not chains, as used in late Lagunas, Clio V6 etc. Completely different engine.

And you need to get one with ceramic coated cams.... If the engine is still in the car and running then it probably has these fitted !!!!!

Thanks guys!

PRV 24v up to 1995 is 90 degrees, SOHC

Are they rare/expensive?

Being SOHC 24v, do they use 'slipper' rocker gear?

1996 onwards L7X version is 24v 60 deg V, quad cam on belts, not chains, as used in late Lagunas, Clio V6 etc

Are those wet-liner?

And you need to get one with ceramic coated cams

Thanks, but why?
Can you get after-market billet items instead?

Rare.... Yes very. Expensive... not really.

In this country the engine was fitted to the Peugeot 605 and the Citroen XM. There are only 12 XM's left in the UK with this engine, but I got mine for less than £500!.

Cams, I haven't looked into this too much at the moment, but I presume replacements can be had from the main dealers with no problem. Uprated cams would have to be custom made.
The early engines basically ate cams so they were changed to cermic coated ones which last okay.

Think it is the same engine in some Safranes but Tony or David will know.

They are pretty thin on the ground, none of the cars sold in the uk that had that engine fitted sold in large numbers - 605 and XM possibly a 900 series Volvo. Remember the 24v was only sold for transverse fitment so depending on what your doing with it you may need an inline 12v engine to scavange the extra parts you will need.
Alpines - GTA 3.0 Turbo, GTA 3.0 Inj (Project DD), GTA 6.2 V8 (500 bhp) , R32 Skyline GTR, BMW Alpina B10 635 Highline, Alpina B10 E39 5 Series, Jaguar 4.2 XKR, Laguna 205GT, BMW 120d.

Cams arent a problem, they can always be reground and reprofiled.

Downside of the engine is it can't use as high lift profiles as the 12v models, so even though it has more valve circumference, certain 12v setups can acheive the same power, though more peaky. There's currently an A310 thats just been finished with a Laguna 12v lump peaking 274bhp on carbs!

An L7X would be a nice upgrade in future, if a suitable adaptor plate could be constructed to match up to the UN1. Engines in Trophy spec are currently hitting 280bhp, with indivudual throttle bodies, higher cam specs and raised compression they are currently reaching 330bhp, normally aspirated.

Venturi 300 Atlanique ran a standard Laguna type V6 with 10:5.1 compression, twin turbocharged at only 7 psi and made 310bhp.

You're being very helpful guys, thanks!

I've seen loads of 24v XM's cheap, but they were all Autos. :?

With cam failure, will the pistons hit the valves, or worse?

Downside of the engine is it can't use as high lift profiles as the 12v models, so even though it has more valve circumference, certain 12v setups can acheive the same power, though more peaky. There's currently an A310 thats just been finished with a Laguna 12v lump peaking 274bhp on carbs!

That's what I'm after, a peaky engine, a mate knows someone with a 250 bhp on carbs, and I thought similarish would suit.

Am I right in thinking that the 12v has opposed and inclined valves like the TU Pug 106/Citroen Saxo, so lowering the advantage of a pent-roof chamber?

A mate asked me to research his 24v V6, and I found this quote:

4 valves are better to be driven by twin-cam, one for intake valves and one for exhaust valves. Honda and Mitsubishi models prefer to use sohc, driving the valves via rocker arms like the aforementioned Triumph. This could be a bit cheaper, but introduce more friction and hurt high speed power. Therefore the sportiest Honda and Mitsubishi still use dohc.

Taken from this page:

http://www.autozine.org/technical_schoo ... to-5-valve

So the 24v SOHC wouldn't suit, the L7X looks good though, but:

Is the L7X version wet-liner type?

What parts are shared with the 12v?

Thanks again!

These will all be the later 60 degree engines rather than the 90 degree engine needed for the GTA.
