A310 Headlights

Postby Box fast » Mon Apr 10, 2017 7:11 am

Hi,

Can anyone help me I have just bought a 1981 A310 from Germany and need to get it MOT'd so the headlight need replacing for RHD units. First what is the best way of removing them and second were the lights used on other Renaults as I can't find any online.

Thanks

Removal of the lights is straightforward. Firstly remove the front boot liner if yours has one. The light units each have 3 ball-ended adjusters that push into plastic sockets in the headlight surround. To remove the lamp unit you just pull it gently near each of the ball-end adjusters. Once one has become detached the other two come out easily.

It's a bit trickier replacing them, especially the outer ones, as it's difficult to see that the ball-ends are over the sockets. You push one home first, check the other two are over the sockets and then push until these have engaged.

Headlights are adjusted for correct position using these adjusters.

Can't help with sourcing of the light units I'm afraid as I haven't investigated that.

They are a very rare headlamp shared I think with a Peugeot. The French A310 club are taking pre orders for a new batch.

Have a LHD 310 here at the moment that has masks/benders fitted to the head lights so that might be a temporary solution.

I recall Mr Sage telling me how to adjust them from LHD to RHD spec... But can't remember what his said... Ask him when you see him.

Had a look on the internet yesterday after Stephen mentioning Peugeot and came across this aussiefrogs forum thread. The headlights look the same as those on a Peugeot 504 cabrio coupe and the forum thread does mention the A310 and Vauxhall Firenze droop snoot.

The same problem in Australia with headlight dipping and one solution shown in the thread. When I get chance I'll look at the mentioned bulb rotation possibility, which makes sense on paper. I seem to recall doing this twenty odd years ago on the A110 to get the dip correct. The bulbs have lasted well!

Hi there
Paul Sage here. You can modify the originals by re positioning the main head lamp bulb by
turning it clockwise by approx. one eighth of an inch and re cutting the mount.
This will throw a cut off beam from right to left.
For more information it is difficult to describe please ring me 0203 241 2065
regards
Paul

I can't remember what my A310 lights looked like but these don't look familiar.

Andy,
If you look at the aussiefrogs link I posted above you'll see they're basically rectangular with flat tops and base and curved sides.
I think it's only the 504 cabrio coupe that had them, not the standard 504.
I think I'd go for what Paul suggested, seems a simpler solution.

I ran into this challenge when trying to certify and register my A310 V6 in New Zealand. Masks are not permitted, so some other solution had to be found.

After a bit of searching, it appears that the same lights were used on the Drop Snoot Vauxhall Firenza, but lights for these are rarer than rocking horse droppings and very expensive. I did look at doing something like what I think Paul Sage is suggesting - my Dyane has this as "standard", so swapping its lights to RHD was dead easy. There was some debate as to whether the lights would pass the certification tests here if modified.

In the end we selected some similar, but slightly squarer sided Hella units. Brackets were made so that the lights could be adjusted from inside the boot. Since there is no chance of another A310 V6 parking next to mine, no-one's going to notice!

If you want more photos, or details of the units, let me know.
