Still running rough

Postby paulrob100 » Fri Jan 29, 2016 9:38 am

Since I bought my GTA Turbo early last year, the car has always had a slight misfire at low revs. I have renewed the Spark Plugs, Ignition Leads, Dizzy Cap, Rotor Arm & Coil. I have fitted reconditioned Injectors, a new Walbro rear fuel pump & both fuel filters. I am running out of ideas.

The car is certainly better, but its still not right, It starts on the button & settles down to what seems like an even idle, but as soon as any revs are applied it hesitates & misfires.

Any ideas ?

Thanks, Paul

Apart from a dodgy 'new item' I would say try changing the TDC sensor .Also check earths are all good, connector blocks, mini timer plugs on injectors,ECU earth on rocker cover .....

Thanks for that Lee

I was thinking about the TDC sensor, I bet its a pig to get at.

Is it worth trying to clean it or will it be best to replace it. Also are they easy to get ? Presumably its the same as the R25 turbo & Volvo 740 turbo ?

thanks, Paul

Apart from the plug yes ,R25 etc will do the job.I only have one OE left in stock and I'm using that on JIL but still available from Renault last time I looked .Not as cheap as ones you will see on Ebay but it's got the correct two pin plug and saves chopping the loom ....and also saves the WTF's going on when you've wired it up 'correctly' and it won't start :silent ;)

Usually though TDC either works or not but it's probably worth changing it as you've done all the rest .If you want to pop over anytime I can give it a look .Might not find anything but second set of eyes sometimes helps :up

Just out of interest have you cleaned out your Idle Air Valve? Worth doing.
Do you know your CO level?

Thanks Lee, I will order a genuine Renault one. If that doesn't fix it I will be over to see you.

John, I have had the Idle control valve off, but mine is the early type (like the one in the photo) & its not obvious how it comes apart.

The last MOT gave a CO reading of 1.43% & an HC reading of 114. This was last February.

Perhaps worth spraying some cleaner through it just to be sure all ok?

I don't know which sensor that is, or how to check it

It's the sensor on the thermostat housing. Someone on here will tell you the correct resistance values for hot and cold....

Hi Martin, thanks for the suggestions.

Its not so much that it coughs & splutters then clears. It seems to idle ok if a little lumpy. as soon as any throttle is applied it sounds like it drops a plug & feels rough. It runs better from about 2000 revs & certainly pulls strongly. There doesn't appear to be any black smoke, but my experience would point to a fuel issue. There is no adjustment, other than at idle ?

I put a meter on the temp sensor today, 267 ohms, which seems about right. I have ordered a new one anyway.

I think I have changed everything. The dizzy cap is Bosch. I have also fitted a new coil & fuel filters (front & rear) the plugs are new & gapped properly. One other issue, on the overrun, particularly in 3rd, the car sometimes shunts & snatches.

Like you say, All good fun :thinking . Thanks, Paul

Yes ,pulling the injs one at a time and see if the engine note alters.Might be worth getting them cleaned as new are very silly price for GTA .Something around £15 each .I have a set or two here that are in need of a clean but they all work,ie click when power'd up .Sometimes they are rusted inside and then pretty much useless .
