If the engine and gearbox have been removed as I think you said
the drive shafts would have been removed and in that instance both
n/s & o/s seals should be changed as they can get damaged when
removing the shafts also on replacing the drive shafts new roll pins and
siliconed when replacing. This from a Renault Alpine timed served mechanics who has see my Vid of the Car , Lee Crowston , you removed them , why did you not do the job right and what i Payed for , https://youtu.be/hbGd6T2pJws?t=9,,https ... Gd6T2pJws,,

No new seals replaced after 30 years in my Car ,Just but the Drive shaft back in to the old seals in to my Car No new Drive shaft seals but in , all so Petrol leeking , steering Bushes , had Gone after 30 years , :RATS

Hello Mr Harry Pyle.

I am sorry to read your displeasure with one of the Alpine specialists.

The section, that you posted in, was for "Web based" help and not for assistance in disagreements with any contractors that you may have employed to work upon your car. I will therefore be moving this topic to the projects section.

As regards your problem, I would like to point out, that while the Club cannot directly recommend specialists, you can listen to other members recommendations and feed back, much like any other service. Any advertisements on this website are sponsored links not endorsements for a service. Furthermore we, as a Club cannot intervene with any disputes that you may have with a specific contractor. All agreements taken out between yourself and any contractor, is your business and not a reflection upon the club.

Yes you can "air" and comment within the forum, as we all have the right to speak what we find, but I must please ask that this forum does not turn into a stage for casting continued aspersions about any full club member that may also operate a business. If we find that this is the case, then you may receive a warning and your posts may be deleted.

Regards
Web Admin.

Why do you need to remove the drive shafts if you drop the engine, gearbox and subframe as one unit?
I'm just here for the gasoline.

I have disconnected the drive shafts off my gearbox at least 4 or 5 times in 12 years.
Never replaced the seals, and the drive shafts dont leak.
I suspect you just need to re seal the pins, which is a ten minute job once the car is up on a ramp. No big deal at all.

No ...Car had extensive rot .Both doors were knackered. It had stood rotting for years .It came to me after I advised him it would be worth more than the usual RHD rotter .He had been offered rotbox UK money for it .
We rot busted it,refurbed running gear front and rear/subframe,new brakes, bearings, balljoints, clutch, waterpipes and passed MOT with no advisories .This was all done at a fixed price and the brief was to get car to MOT std.It would then be shipped to his mate in Brum for paint.
Harry seems to think he should have got a new car for his money and anything that goes wrong with it from now on is down to me .He rang me once the other day,I was busy so didn't pick up .He then started slating me on a Frenchy FBook page less than 24hrs later.
I've had this conversation already.......he says he will slate me on every Alpine forum he can find so I'm not going to comment any further on the subject.

Going to stay neutral on this one.
Can appreciate that Harry may not be happy with the work done, but not convinced that mudslinging on all the forums is the best way to do it, there's normally due process to follow.

What I will say though, as a mechanic myself.
That's how things work when they break. One minute they work, the next they are broken.
Things which didn't leak one minute can leak the next. Especially after a major recommission, niggly faults are pretty common, normally a good shakedown period and a degree of snagging process can be expected

I once replaced a clutch on a car for a customer and did his MOT for him at the same time, a week later he phoned and said he had a problem, so we told him to bring it back and we would take a look and repair it FOC.

Turned out that the cassette player had stopped playing cassettes, and according to the customer "was fine before you cowboys got your hands on it".

We sent him to get a second opinion and if they could prove that the clutch repair was the cause of the faulty cassette player, we would give him a free Kenwood cd player.
He never came back.........

I Can sympathise with Clee also. I owned and ran a Japanese car tuning business for years, and in the end it's people like this who grind you down. Just because people spend 'good' money with you, they expect everything to be perfect regardless of whether they paid you to do any work on the area that failed or not.

I remember a few scenarios that spring to mind which remind me of why I got out of the business!

- Cam Belts slipping on the Dyno on fresh imports from Japan with no history of a cam belt change, subsequent engine damage - Our fault

- Running a Supercharger on Stock Engine Management for 6 months and ragging the nuts off it, before having an aftermarket ECU fitted by us, and then engine quickly loses compression on the Dyno - our fault

Unfortunately, the internet is such a powerful medium and word travels fast, and people don't want to hear both sides of the story - they only hear what the 'Bedroom Expert' has to say!

Lee,
I think you have done a top job saving this neglected alpine.
I think the owner has answered his own questions.
One he has owned the car for twenty plus years yet let it go into total disrepair.

The simple questions are, did you rebuild gearbox? No
Did you replace drive shafts? No

Did he ask you to replace every 30 year old seal on the car? Probably not.

You can't please everyone.

My driveshafts leaked and they had new seals fitted, post gearbox change, as the 30 year old drive shafts were scored. The best solution if they are scored is to fit easy sleeves to shafts then replace seals. I gave John grief at the time, but he did everything he could to alleviate the problem, it was just age and wear on old components. Sorry John.

I bought him a sandwich the other day ( Clee ) and he hasn't even offered to pay me back, he's an absolute bounder.
I'm gonna spit in the next one.

The things you have to do to give away Kenwood CD player and I bet you have it on the shelf collecting dust now.

So did you crack it then? I know you'd mentioned trying this route previously, but I'm not sure if you've ever reported back on the results. I think my car is similar, new seals, refitted a second time to try to seat them slightly differently, but still weeping oil.

Darren yes, easy seals did the trick.
I still have the part numbers and box if anyone else is interested.
Also one of the French alpine shops sells an improved seal, I bought one of those but never fitted as yet.
