Ticking noise

Postby paulrob100 » Tue Apr 11, 2017 8:42 pm

I have a strange ticking noise on my GTA. It sounds like a speedo cable that needs to be lubricated, but as the GTA has an electronic speedo it cant be that. It seems to be speed dependant and seems worse when the car is cold. as the speed increases the road noise drowns it out.

It appears to be coming from the dash area, but as always with these things its difficult to pinpoint.

Any thoughts please ?

There is a small motor inside the Speedo that powers it. this maybe the issue.
Does the mileage still work? Does the ticking stop when you are stationary??
My bet is its this motor with the mileage gears...

Is the trip counter stuck? (The mechanical one)

Sometimes they stick and need a reset by pushing the stalk.
I'm just here for the gasoline.

Thank you both for the suggestions.

I don't think its the trip meter. I will try resetting the trip, but I think it will be the speedo head motor. Both the trip & the total mileage readouts are working.

Sorry, yes it stops when stationery. I had to take the car out for a spin just to be sure.

These GTA's like it rough. Does the sound stop when you give the dash top a BIG_MVS tickle?

Ah, Thanks ....... that rules out the ventilation motor which runs continuously when the engine is running and the Alp is stationary.
If you want to test if it is, in fact, the speedo motor, you could unplug the three pin connector that drives the speedo at the bottom of the wheel arch engine side (tie the detached lead up out of the way) and see if the ticking sound miraculously disappears when driving ....... Take the opportunity to spray the contacts of the 3 pin plug with switch cleaner when you reconnect it.
BTW ..... I am assuming you have a Turbo Alp. ;)
