They will only impound it for the duration of the event.....unless you go home there and then! Make sure you know what youre doing before entering!!!! They always check helmets and suits.

I'm not really bothered what class I end up in - I just want to make the car as fast as possible within the budget I have. I want my car how I want it, not how the MSA want it, although I'll obviously have to comply with any safety requirements. Theres a handful of us planning to do 1/2 a dozen events or so next year and I think the competition between ourselves will be the fun part. If I wanted to be competitive within a class I'd probably buy a lightweight EVO or Scooby RA. When we went to Lyddon last week the standard production class had a GT3 Porshe 911, which was quicker than most of the modified stuff. If we can sort out some kind of event calender we could run a competition - of sorts. CAR just lumped all front engined cars in 1 class, rear engined in another and non-Renaults in another. We could keep 1 class for all club members - with open spec (I doubt we'd get enough entrants to start sub-dividing them). A list of approx 15-20 events spread around the country with points for taking part as well as finishing in the top 3 RAOC members. Amongst them we could throw in a 1/4 mile day at Avon and Santa Pod, sprints, hill-climbs, Brighton top speed run. We could probably enter many events that CAR do as Paul Godfrey has proved an excellent competition secretary for them and has many contacts and Tim Jeffrey and the other competitors are a good bunch, I can make enquiries if people wish.

The CAR championship bit the dust because hardly anyone did it, and although theres talk of reviving it next year I dont believe they have firmed anything up yet. I was asked by Paul to approach my own club about them doing Teesside next year and got a positive response, but have never been recontacted to make proper arrangements....hence why I suspect there wont be a CAR championship again next year.
I was advising you on the eligibility aspect of your car not wether you'd stand a chance of winning or not (the MSA dont want your car any particular way other than eligible). If you arrive to compete in the Mod prod class without a cage you will almost certainly be sent home by the scrutineers....probably without your entry fee. Same goes for 2 1/2" harnesses next year.....scrutineers have been warning me all year! I've been involved in speed events for many years and have had my fair share of eligibility problems and queries......but if you dont want the advice!!!!!

Configuration does not mean height or settings


I know everyone runs aftermarket springs and dampers but the 2005 rule book is quite clear.

Sprints, Hillclimbs & Drag Races:

Regulations for Road Going Production Cars
Page 176. 11.7.1 Suspension configuration must remain standard.

Regulations for Modified Production Cars
Page 177. 12.7.1 Additions and modifications to springs, shock absorbers or suspension height are free.

There is no mention of permitting spring and/or height changes for the roadgoing class.

I think you are interpretting configuration wrongly Stephen......I'm glad youre not a scrutineer!! :D
You cant compare regs between classes.......especially as they were formulated at different times. If I was wrong you can be damn sure the scrutineers at Harewood or in Scotland would have pulled people up on it. Some of the cars at Harewood push the regs to the limit which is why the scrutineers are very very strict.

I think it's more a case that the scrutineers would be hard pressed to identify what is and isn't standard on many of the cars so they have to let it go. It's not quite so easy as a tick the box list of tyre types or looking for interior trim. Particularly in the case of something like a GTA which by virtue of it's low production run goes straight into the Specialised Production Cars category anyway. In fact if you had a really pedantic scrutineer (like me :wink: ) you could exclude the GTA Turbo from competition in this class completely on the grounds that it's annual production run did not meet the minimum eligible figure. Fortunately the Atmo just makes it 8) .

Unfortunately both cars fail to meet the engine production number requirements so we'd better keep quiet about that one :wink:
