GTA Erratic Speedometer

Postby 108002917 » Tue Nov 29, 2005 4:56 pm

Does anyone know if there are any common problems associated with the GTA speedo?
I have had my Turbo for nearly 9 years now, and although I had heard of various speedometer issues at the time have never experienced any problems until now!!!
It is still working, but occasionally stops and then starts again. There is no pattern to this, but what I have noticed is that the computer trip still seems to be working even when the speedometer has stopped. This indicates to me that the speed sensor is OK??
I am hoping that it may be just a dirty condition at one of the plug connectors? Are there any easy ways of locating them and where are they positioned. I have looked at the wiring diagram manual and the 2 main ones appear to be behind the speedo cluster?

Has anyone had similar experiences and what is the fix?

Your suggestions will be most welcome.

Thanks,

Jeff Griffiths :(

Hi Jeff

No, nobody's ever heard of a dodgy speedo on a GTA...

Not really

If you use the search function at the top of the screen, and search for 'speedo' there are loads of threads on it, and you can gather what information you need from it. Its a very common fault.

The plug is accessible from behind the RH air vent on the dash cowling..

Making sure all the pins were tight in the right hand side plug behind the speedo cluster fixed my erratic speedo. As Dave said accessible from the RH vent on the dash.

Hey guys - I had heard that there had been problems with the speedo, but I didn't realise how many problems until I used the search topics as you had advised. I suppose I have been pretty lucky over the last 9 years!!!!

I will check the plug sockets first and hope that it is not a speedo issue.
Thanks, and I will let you know what I find.

9 years without a problem

Mine stops and starts depending on the weather.

I keep the LHS vent slightly ajar so it can be lifted off more easily as I find it's the big block connector that gives me the most problem - bad connection etc..
a squirt of 'switch cleaner' now and then helps

Got the das what are the sizes of the dials David. Having learnt on Sunday that there are approx 4000 yellow wires awaiting me behind the binnacle is there a master plan to the install.
