Radiator fans

Postby darrenbiggs » Sun Jun 18, 2006 9:50 pm

My rad fan has stopped working (nice timing  ) and since the rad is on its last legs I'm having it re-cored locally and want to replace the fan at the same time.

Has anyone got a good idea for a replacement or two? I believe that the loom and bracket exist already to mount a second fan, (as on the air con cars) so I'm considering adding this as an upgrade - it's just a case of sourcing a pair of motors & fans.

Paul Sage told me ages ago that they're identical to R5 turbo fans but does anyone know for sure?

David G - have you got any from your recent breaking efforts?

New fans

Thought I'd go the whole hog with two new fans - 1600 cfm of flow in total. Having tested one of them with a 9v battery I can believe it - so much better than that Renault original!

They came with mounting kits so should strap directly to the rad, and all that has to be done is splice the connector on and get the voltage round the right way so they suck instead of blow

Suggest you do not change the polarity of those fans before you have checked that the blades cannot be reversed (undo screw, and turn blade over).

Mycar has a 2nd fan connector, I'll test it to see if there is 12volts accross it when the temp sensor is activated.

You can either reverse the blades (undo and flip over) or run with voltage reversed by all accounts. It goes in tomorrow morning to have the rad replaced so fingers crossed it'll be simple.

I don't think reversing the polarity will work, as fans are designed to be 'pusher's or 'pullers'. If you reverse it, it doesnt move much air around...

Yep, I support that, I tried it on a 10 electric fan and there was very little air flow when the polarity was reversed. It is like flying an aeroplane in reverse, the aerodynamics of the wings are just not quite right for a full speed flight.

I fitted twin GATE fans. (OEM Sierra Cosworth). Very good fit.

Had two different fan types. One for push. One for pull. They were a different design and not reversible. Polarity was the same for both.

If yours are not reversible just fit them in front of the rad if they blow and behind if they suck!

Since I had most problems when stationary I fitted them to the front blowing to keep things cool when I'm stuck in traffic. Obstruction to airflow when moving is minimal and it all cools down much faster than it did before.

All personal preference though. Bit of a chicken and egg.

£45 each (including mounting kit) from NFAutos ust a few miles down the road from me. http://www.nfauto.co.uk/download/cataloguejuly2005.pdf

Back to voltage etc - I think ideally yes you reverse the blades (undo the nut and flip), but if need be the voltage can be switched as an alternative option, however you lose a bit of flow as the blades aren't working to max efficiency.

The guy who's doing the rad often fits this type so hopefully he'll set them up in the best way possible.

Rad Fans

Postby BIG_MVS » Tue Aug 15, 2006 2:28 pm

Quick Query,

I am right in thinking that my non a/c V6 Turbo should only have 1 rad fan as standard then?

Also this is on the offside of the rad, there is a connector for a fan to be located on the nearside too?

When I turn the engine off, the rad fan switches off straight away as well, it should still be cooling the rad surely as it's stood until the temp has come down?

Any ideas?

The loom was set up for two - that's why it's nice and easy to add a second fan.

By the way I'm well chuffed with mine :D
