Monte Carlo MC220 - For the record.

Postby jacw » Thu Mar 17, 2011 10:03 am

I enjoyed the "quiz" about the Monte Carlo MC220 Grp 4 re-creation, but felt that I should put the record straight for posterity.
The "clue in the wheels" is correct in that the pcd is Ford not Peugeot, even though the wheel diameter is 15".
A total of three monocoque tubs were built, DWMC220-001,-002 & -003. The grp 4 car on the trailer is -002.
The intention was to only use 2 litre 4 cylinder Renault engines & particularly those that fitted on the UN1 bellhousing, the UN1 being the gearbox of choice.
At the time the 21 turbo engine was never considered because of intercooler cooling complexities & resultant costs.
The original car, -001 used a Renault 20 engine but did however use a 21t rocker cover fitted in reverse, so that oil filling was made possible! This was later upgraded to an "all singing" Salv Sacco prepared 12v engine as featured in Milles Miles magazine,
The designation 220 was for 220kph (138mph) top speed not some engine power measurement and was also a play on 2x110.
The featured Grp 4 car has another Salv Sacco built 12v engine, (steel crank & rods, lightweight flywheel, forged h/c pistons, special cam etc) and was built & dyno'd with ecu controlled efi with Jenvey throttle bodies.
You can see the original Monte Carlo MC220 being road tested by "Car Graphic" magazine on www.youtube.com/user/Acentdix

Best Wishes, John Wheeler.

Isn't there a 4wd GTA in the Renault (as opposed to Rotherhithe) Alpine collection?
