Paint job

Postby StuartC » Mon Apr 25, 2005 11:23 am

Alas my black Gta is now suffering the age old problem of laquer peeling. I need to have the whole car done but also need the front end looking at as the nose cone doesn't seem to sit correctly. Anyone know of a firm that does a reasonable job at a fair price? If so, how much am I looking at.

If your talking about the where the nose cone meets the front wings at the top - they never fit properly. I sanded mine down as muck as i dared too when i painted it, but its still not perfect. From what i have heard there is always a mil or 2 difference between the front edge and the rear. :?

No its not just that, it doesn't sit tight to the bumper either, its OK in the centre but seems to go upwards by about 6mm as it gets to the wings on both sides. Its never been pranged but was returned like that after I'd had the headlight glasses renewed. The garage tried several times to re-align it but reckon the nose cone had warped! Beats me.

Fit and finish is crap on mine too....one front wing sits higher at the front than the other and that was even before I crashed it! I have been quoted £800 for a full spray, but that was using my father-in-law (well nearly!) and his connections to get a 'mates' type price. (no hes not mafia before anyone asks :D )Previous to that the same place were looking at around the £1000 mark. They are very good and know about fibreglass cars, but W. Cumbria is a long long way from Stoke on Trent!!!!

Try your local TVR dealer. They should be pretty well placed to recomend fibreglass body and paint experts.

The reason the front wings are often proud where they meet the nose is because the small bolt on plate that joins them together is missing 90% of the time if the car has had any repairs ie the nose cone or wings removed.

The reason is simple. It is an absolute B*****D to fit even if you have tiny hands. Hardly anyone ever refits them.

Fit these plates and the wings and nose should fit snuggly but be prepared for much frustration and multiple lacerations!!

I believe Tony Law's car was painted by a TVR specialist and they did a superb job. Although the GTA front and rear bumpers and wings are plastic, the rest of the car is polyester which is a pretty similar to TVR (although they use hand laid glass fibre)
