I appreciate it was a comment made in passing and I'm being a bit pedantic, but i'd point out GTAs are far too new for that to be a 'fact'.
It's very possible that the steel came from a french manufacturer but they also buy steel from all over europe.
Less so from the UK now as we don't make much, but a few years back, they even used british steel!
The problem was the complete lack of protection, as you also mentioned.
