Thanks Stephen..... by the way, do you have any stock for the aluminium cooling pipes and heater pipe that run up the tunnel?

Crossed my mind.... Or even some minimalist replacement mirrors but not sure how it would look? Besides, saving for necessities this year!

First100 miles:beginning of the end or end of the beginning?

Postby gchristofi » Tue Jun 30, 2015 9:04 pm

Ok, so the mirror is "fixed" so on to the next little task.

The headlights are in a sorry state. Whilst it was sitting for those years, one side even had plant growth wiggling its way inside! The headlamp covers are the sh*ttest thin perspex imaginable (probably 1mm thick) and all furred up on the inside too. For now, just want to get access to give them a really good clean up and then maybe even replace it with some new sh*tty perspex!

These photos actually make the headlight covers look better than they are in person.

Whilst removing the sidelight from the nearside headlamp, a big pool of warm water drained out! Hadn't even notice that it was filled up and had been working too.... well enough to get MoT.

So decided that easiest access must be by removing the headlamp assembly into the front luggage area. Fail! This is as far as I could get the assembly without breaking anything! Any tips anyone? Should I be approaching this another way?

I have my eyes on those already, but my slippery slippery slope is already a little too steep this year! Next year, after Seats, harness, roll hoop would love to fit the perspex engine cover possibly even the headlamp covers....... Radiator on its way, coolant pipes about to be ordered.... ;-)

Just about to place an order with Simon Auto for coolant pipes that run through the tunnel. Got me thinking, what else should I definitely replace whilst the engine is out and therefore I might consider adding to this order and avoiding double shipping.

i.e. new Thermostat at £15 seems a good idea as major parts of cooling system will be renewed

All ideas, comments and advice gratefully received.

Dizzy and rotor arm. Common problem area easily sorted and a doddle to do with the engine out (also much easier to free things if the bolts stick a la Brad)

How are your rubber hoses? I'd check them and replace - again all a lot easier with the engine out, in particular there are a couple of very small ones at the back of the heads, plus the chubby fellas that join to the water pump etc. Big long hoses are then a matter of choice when you plumb it back in - samco are the obvious choice for all this.

I might also opt to replace the clutch slave if it's all out. At this age if it's not been done then it's a pain if it goes later and yours has stood around some time. Also check the fork arm on the clutch and uprate to the later one if it's not already been done.

Clutch, rear main seal, driveshaft seals.... all worth checking or thinking about.

Hi there ,

If you want to get a new set of water pipes , I can get them remade for you fairly quickly and at a better price than Simon auto...
I had mine remade locally (Bournemouth) last year in stainless steel, see my thread page 7 and 8

http://www.renaultalpine.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=6087&start=90

I'll contact the guys tomorrow to have an idea of leadtimes and will let you know if you are interested.

Price would be cheaper if others were also interested and we ordered 5sets or more ..

Thanks Darren.. Of course, you guys aren't mind readers, I should have said already got a dizzy cap and rotor waiting to go on and will probably replace the clutch and related items i.e. fork as a matter of course.
Good call on the seals and condition of other rubber hoses. Are the clutch slaves a known week spot? Is it just checking for sings of leakage or do they break down internally?

Certainly interested Cedric. Assume they can be re-made without me supplying the old ones to copy? They certainly look good in your thread. This is probably a good time to come clean and admit I'm not going to be doing the pipes myself. Too impatient.... and know my strengths and weaknesses! Planning on opting for some RAT magic towards the end of July and would ship them directly there.

Current prices from Simon for 3 aluminium pipes is €482 which is equivalent of around £350 at the moment (Pending Grexit, might be equivalent to 99p next week..... but don't laugh..... I'm half Greek!).

Be very interested in what your guys can do. Is your beast fully up an running now? Thanks.

Clutch slaves tend to weep when they get old and the seals break down - you see some fluid loss (collects in the 'V' of the engine) but really you don't get much sign. They're a pig to replace in situ (remove the turbo etc) so considering they're cheap you may as well do it whilst the lump and gearbox are out as a precaution. Obviously if you have records of it being replaced then ignore that. Also when they do pop they often tend to go in a really big way and snap the fork arm. Old design was a weaker item, so the late version doesn't suffer the same problem.

Oil seals, well it's probably just easy to do them. Again they're cheap. Dizzy seal can also be done at the same time I should add.

Good chance to refresh the suspension - paint or paint and re-bush. Depends on age and again whether it's ever been done before. (Bushes are expensive, but Mr Dell has them back in stock I think???)

Definitely do the clutch slave whilst engine out. Right pita with engine in as I can testify!

Rotor arm is a good shout to. Not too bad with engine in but must be a lot more accesible with engine out if you need to remove the carrier to drill out seized bolts.

Thanks
