A610 Won't start!

Postby r5gordini » Fri Nov 27, 2015 10:07 am

This is G10 PRV again ;-)

It has spark (the garage removed, cleaned and refitted the dizzy cap and rotor).

Where is the fuel pump relay that might need a temporary earth strap?

Might need to clean the ECU contacts?

Was running fine before but a little difficult to start - what are the first things to check? It's in at my friendly garage...

Thanks!

Strewth who sold you this pup again? ;)

Fuel pump relay is between the rear seats next to the ECU.

If they have just replaced the dizzy and rotor and nothing else I would look at that, I suppose it would be like telling the friendly garage how to suck eggs if you tell them to push home all the ht leads etc?

Difficult one for me to answer really ...If you were doing the repairs yourself then I'd offer some pearls but as it's with 'Professionals' :sarcasm

Basics...does it crank ? does fuel-pump prime ?Does it have spark ?

You should hear the fuel pump prime when the ignition is turned on. It's under the fuel tank at the front. If it has an original set up, it will run then stop, if it has a strap fitted, it will just run, before you start the engine.
If it has spark, I'm voting for wrong HT lead positioning, missing centre electrode in the dist cap or broken King lead?
Hard to diagnose by forum...
I'm sure it will be fine again soon, good luck....

Andrew, in all the years I have owned that car, it might have had some issues, but it has never ever not started, so I really not sure whats going on. Everything has been replaced around the ignition system, with proper Bosch components etc.

Had a really similar issue with mine. Replacing the rotor arm and distributor cap with genuine parts solved it. The old parts didn't look terribly worn so it wasn't obvious they were shot. The distributor cap is interchangeable with a BMW item from memory

Well - I didn't get time to post a reply (sorry about that)!

When I went to the garage, I got it going pretty quickly. It seems to need the tiniest bit of accelerator to get it to run, then it starts and runs fine. So nothing major wrong with it!

I will replace the distributor cap and rotor arm as a matter of course. Hopefully that will make it a bit easier to start.

Brakes have been bled and now feel fantastic!!!!!

And Phildini - I am not complaining. Loving the car so far. Amazing. Truly amazing!

My garage said the distributor cap and rotor arm were worn. I don't see how they can be after such low mileage but it's a good thing to replace anyway.

Interesting to hear that you need to apply a little accelerator to start. This could be the cold start sensor heading on its way out.
Mine went a few years ago and before it was replaced, needed lots of accelerator to get it to fire up from cold.

Is it any easier to start when warm?

Interesting on all counts! I don't know how to set up the TPS - I'll take a look at the workshop manual. However... I started it from cold a few times and it started without any throttle application at all, right on the button. Maybe it just needed driving a bit as it had been sat for a few months?

I'm going to try again today to see how it starts. Phildini wasn't able to store the car inside so some things might have got a bit damp. Since I brought it home, I have kept the car in a well-ventilated garage. Maybe some electrical connectors are drying out? No idea...
