TDC..starting issues ?

Postby Dave Williams » Wed Sep 21, 2016 12:41 pm

A couple of times now...I had starting issues...
I suspect the TDC signal is the issue.
I gave the TDC lead where it plus into loom a wiggle..and it seemed to fix as the car then started.

Q1: When the TDC fails (typically) is it the leads that fail (from being cooked) or the sensor (from being cooked..or covered in gunk..?

I reckon that even in 3 years since the engine rebuild this little blighter has pulsed >10 million times....and lost the will to live

I suspect the thing to do is replace the TDC with a new sensor....(with insulation)...and maybe replace the plug on the loom end.
Q2: Are these plugs available ?

Q3: Anyone have issues with the connector itself...(I.e. does an unplug/plug and contact clean ever help).

Any other TDC sensor anecdotes ? Great to share with friends in the pub !!!

They fail by de-magnetising due to heat cycles - think back to your GCSE 'how to make a magnet ' in physics. :-)

Once they've gone, they've gone though so it's just a case of replacing. Mr Faulks did some tests and took my old one to measure how degraded it was so have a search if you're interested- can't remember the thread off the top of my head.

Alternatively if it's just the leads then pretty sure it'll just be the connector. In which case you can hardwire it with any join / connection you like really. Just remember that the wires are reversed on the later TDC sensors as they wired them back to front - so check before you pull it apart.

Mines hard wired with crimped connections and insulation tape!
I'm just here for the gasoline.

Thanks...

So it's the Hall effect that makes 'em work...but the "Hall and Oates effect" that breaks 'em....

....Whoa-ooh here she comes..she's a Magnet-heater...
