Several question on A310

Postby xranalli » Sat Mar 18, 2017 6:30 pm

Dear Friends
I need your help

1. I've PLS wheels, front 205-50-15, rear 225-50-15, I've to replace my old tyres, wich brand do you suggest me? I saw Pirelli Pzero but they are expensive...

2. I would to setup wheels parameters (toe-in, inclination to ground and so on) but I don't know parameters I've to set with my wheels (these are not standard), maybe can I use the same parameters of standard wheels (195-55-15, 220-55-15)?

3. temperature today was about 20°C but when I go slow (after fast rounds...) cooling fan started, temperature indicated was under 90°C but cooling fan started, this happened many time, is this normal or I've to check anything?

many many thanks

It is always good to update your profile with your location, so that others know where in the world you are.

Simon, I think xranalli answered that previously as Italy.

I did some checks on the cooling system on my car in September last year when the ambient temperature was 18 C. I ran the engine statically and once the dashboard gauge was reading 94 C the cooling fans cut in and ran for about 2 minutes. When the temperature had dropped to 90 C they cut out. In a further 2 minutes the temperature was back up to 94 C and the fans cut in again. This cycle then repeated itself.

When on the road the fans can be heard cutting in but generally only in slow moving traffic.

Not sure whether the system on my car could be considered to be 'normal' but it's as it's always been since restoring the car except for the time when the temperature switch in the radiator was faulty and not switching the fans on at all. Needless to say I replaced the switch.

Can't offer any advise about suspension settings but wouldn't have thought you'd be too far out with standard settings.

Tyres can be a financial challenge, perhaps someone on here with a Phase 2 could offer suggestions.

Toyo T1-r (300€)
Toyo R888r (semislick, maybe not good for everyday use...) (550€)
Pirelli Pzero unsimmetrical (800€)

The car looks really good as do the PLS wheels, similar to the ones I've recently fitted to my A110.
Do you know where I could buy the black plastic centre caps from?

unfortunatly I do not know where you can buy them, they were together with the car.
Maybe I can design and make for you aluminium cap black anodized (I've a supplier that can machine them)...but the cost could be high, not for my design (it is fee) but for material and machining

Thanks for the offer but that would be expensive. There is a Company in Germany that make them, but quite expensive for what they are. At the moment I've fitted some Compomotive centre caps that I modified to fit. I would prefer the original PLS shape though.

Don't have any opinion on the tyres you list as I bought Michelin XDX all round and only have experience of those (185/70/13 front and 205/70/13 rear). In fact, for the rears, the XDX was the only tyre available in that size and there wasn't anything available with similar rolling radius.

As I said earlier in the post perhaps a Phase 2 owner could let you know what they're using.

Xranalli - super nice car!! Maybe check the states for tires, Tirerack and Discount tires you may find what you need for a good price.

John send a sketch of the centers you want and I can rapid proto some up and ship them to you. From there we can make some more permanent ones out of resin or other.

Thanks for the offer Brian. I do have one centre cap so will be able to produce a drawing.

The best tyres rather depends where and how you're planning to drive it and for what mileage (how many kilometres do you think you'll do in a year).
If you're planning on road driving only and for a long distance then Michelins are one of the better options as they grip well and last for many miles (kms).

However if you think you'll only do maybe 3-4,000 km per year and you want good grip for the road which can also be used occasionally on a track then Toyo Proxes or Falken 914s are good options. I've heard that Kumho and Maxxis do a good tyre as well, but only from friends of friends...
I had the previous 512 Falkens of both my A310s following a recommendation from my German A310 friends. They were very good tyres but needed to be changed around 10-15,000 km (for me that was a few years driving and they wore before they became too old).
50 profile tyres give a smaller circumference than standard tyres, so you may want to consider 55 profile instead.
60 profile are slightly too big but can be made to fit if you are happy to modify the body slightly.

I stayed with the original suspension alignment specifications because everyone I know does the same.

Again the best oil depends on the condition of your engine and what you plan to do with the car.
If it's an original 2.7 engine and done more than 100k km and will be road use only, then I would buy 20w-50 from a good name at the best 'deal' price.
If you want to do loads of miles (kms) and track work then maybe full synthetic is better, but if the engine is not newly rebuilt then do not go for thin oil as it will leak around the piston rings and through the seals...

I can't say whether it's the best engine oil for the car as I don't run a test facility. :D
The MDR says 20W 50 oil so I used this one by Millers oils. I've been using it now for 4 years without any problems. I have changed the oil in that time, I should add.
