Hi John,
Here are the pictures, I think that your theory will work, if you'd like my old needle valve I can post that to you so,you can file it down in preparation!
As you can see, with the top hexagon intact, you can't get the needle valve out.
Turned down it should work, its close with the normal flange.
The dirt in the carb and needle valve means that it's a good thing that most of the rest of the fuel system is new.
Thanks
Lee

Hi Lee,
Thanks for the pics and nice to get answers to my theory. It really was just my thinking in case your pin would not budge. Thanks for the offer of the old one, but I won't take it any further at the moment. Now that we know, from your experience, that the pin can be drifted out with reasonable ease, that's what I will do if mine gives trouble, but thanks.
If one had to file or cut the hexagonal peaks off, it looks as if you would have to take the brass peaks down to match the diameter of the round section between the hexagons. It certainly would take quite a bit of time.
Keep us informed on your progress with your Atmo ..... maybe we will see it in Macon next year ferry permitting.
All the best

Well carbs back together, including some excellent service from an eBay man in Greece (throttle rod clips) and the Essex carb specialists who found me the missing little bits.
Now am realising that I haven't got pictures of the headlight assemblies or the wiper system crank angle.
Has anyone got a wiper assembly (in park location) they can photograph so I can get the crank angle right before putting it back.
In a similar vein anyone got a set of headlights out of the car on the backplate they can take pictures of?
I need to know which are the short and which are the long screws for the headlight adjusters.
Parts book isn't much help.
Thanks
Lee

The car now has the engine back in and is taking shape rapidly. I expect to get it back from Clee next weekend or so.

Hi Lee, I've got the boot lining out of the front of my GTA at present and remembered your post re headlamp screws from the other day . Hopefully attached is a shot of the rear of the offside headlamp assembly showing the long/short adjustment screws.

You are right Clee, its definitely in the home stretch now with most of the work behind us,the hidden but important stuff is pretty much over and the more obvious progress will come quickly now. Very different to 18 months ago. I'm getting excited.
That fuel system replumb and all the new pipework fitted should mean no issues with leaks for a while and it will have a fuel system that can cope with ethanol in the petrol too. There is a surprising amount of pipework even in an atmo.

Looking good. Just as a heads up the R6 fuel line you are using has approximately a years life span with the ethanol content in the pump fuel these days. You really want to be using R9 from a safety perspective. This is pretty much accurate:

SAE J30 R6: Carburettors - ethanol will easily destroy that fuel hose.
SAE J30 R7: Carburettors/fuel injection - as above.
SAE J30 R9: Carburettors/fuel injection - can be used with petrol up to 50% ethanol content.

Thanks John.
Uk is what 5% ethanol (e5) just now?
A quick search certainly shows that R9 would be better, but many places cite R6 as being good up to 15% ethanol, depending on the actual manufacturer. As this hasn't got a brand I can't go much further to check how long this will have on 5%.
On my dive club outboard, the fuel ate the pipes altogether (no fule pressure at all) with more regular use and not being submerged in it, it seems that cracks are the risk maybe I'll get more life. As the uk is still e 5 rather than e10 fuel I'll have to keep an eye on it.
Either way new pipes have got to be better than stuff that's not been used for 20 years.
The joy of classic cars eh.

By that rational most of the GTA's out there should be pissing fuel all over the place by now then as most will have 25 year old lines .....
Horses courses. R6 will be fine .

I've run top line braided hoses in JIL but that is going through the cabin so MSA/FIA rules apply .
